Watermelon Weekend

All About Watermelon

Seasonality: Watermelon comes into season in late July and will likely stay in supply into October.

Nutrition Highlights: Watermelon is a natural source of electrolytes (found in sports drinks like Gatorade) to help regulate water in your body.

Preservation/storage:  Cut watermelon into cubes and freeze it on a cookie sheet before storing it in a bag or container. It can be used later in smoothies, popsicles or other frozen treats.

One of the most highly anticipated products of the summer, a fresh and local watermelon is like a treat like no other. Sweet and juicy, it may be the world’s healthiest dessert.

While we do sell watermelon through the Online Farmers Market, it is available in limited quantity and tends to go quite quickly. Sellers like Stout’s Market sell watermelon at roadside stands around the community. Keep your eyes peeled if you’re in need of a melon fix!

Strawberry Watermelon Salad

Earlier this summer, the official Iowa City Farmers Market shared a recipe for a strawberry watermelon summer salad that we thought looked absolutely delicious. Now that watermelon is fully available, it’s time to give it a try.

To make the salad, mix together…

  • Sliced strawberries (2 cups recommended)
  • Cubed watermelon (2 cups recommended)
  • Cucumber cut into any kind of pieces (2 cups recommended)
  • A handful of fresh mint or basil leaves
  • Crumbled feta cheese (3/4 cup recomended)
  • Sumac spice (1 tsp recomended… optional)

Toss with a dressing (perhaps balsamic vinaigrette or lemon poppyseed) and enjoy!
