When we say “green beans” we’re talking about any and all of the long, colorful, skinny beanpoles found growing on farms and in gardens around Iowa. Green, purple, yellow, spotted– they’re all beautiful and brilliant in their own way.
Within the past few weeks green bean plants have started thriving in our part of the world and will continue to do so for months to come, with many growers cultivating more than one crop throughout the season. Grab some yourself through the Online Farmers Market.
Green Bean Serving Suggestion
Green beans can be cooked in any number of ways: steamed, boiled, sauteed, roasted, fried. They are often served with a little butter and salt to make a simple, easy side dish.
To take your roasted green beans up a notch, consider adding garlic and Parmesan cheese for a more flavorful bean. Simple directions as follows:
- Preheat oven to 425° F.
- Toss green beans with olive oil, salt, pepper and grated or shredded Parmesan cheese. For one pound of beans, about 1/4 cup of cheese will do.
- Roast for 20-25 minutes on a greased or lined baking sheet, tossing halfway.
