Let’s talk local fruit! While technically speaking, fruit is any fleshy, seed-bearing part of a plant (including things like tomatoes and zucchini!), this page points users to local fruit in the traditional sense: sweet berries, apples, melons and more. Whether you buy these seasonal treats picked fresh by a local grower or pick them yourself, local fruit is more flavorful, nutritious and long-lasting than what you will find in a conventional produce aisle.

Eggs laid by hens on small- to mid-sized independent farms are often healthier and more nutritious than conventional eggs from industrial operations. Farmers raising eggs for consumers close to home tend to provide top-tier feed to their layers with plenty of outdoor access for grazing. The difference is a darker, richer yolk and a longer lasting product.
Fortunately, producers in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids area have farm fresh eggs available year-round. Our Local Food Explorer resource makes it easy to learn about egg producers near you.
