2021 Local Food & Education Stations

In 2021, F2F offered free local food, food samples and learning activities

History

In past years, Field to Family has provided free seasonal produce, food samples and nutrition education at sites located in “food deserts” around Johnson County via our “Farm Stands” program. In 2020, we hosted 58 Farm Stands from July 1to November 30 at locations throughout Johnson County, serving 859 households. We distributed an estimated total of 6,600 pounds of freshly harvested, locally grown produce during this timeframe.

Field to Family’s “Local Food and Education Stations” offered free local foods, food samples and learning activities alongside the Community Mobile Food pantry

Funding from the Johnson County Department of Social Services supported this program.

Activities and Recipes

Our staff and volunteers distribute food samples prepared with local ingredients and facilitate family-friendly activities at Local Food and Education Stations throughout the summer. Find recipe cards for our favorite food samples and DIY instructions for completing some of our favorite activities at home.

DIY “Chia Friend”

  1. Take any small cup or container (we use compostable seed-starting cups) and create a “face” with any craft supplies you have available. Think stickers, markers, crayons, googly eyes or anything else!
  2. Fill the cup with potting soil, stopping about 1/4-1/2 inch from the top.
  3. Sprinkle a layer of chia seeds (available at the grocery store!) on top of the soil.
  4. Gently water (misting with a spray bottle works best, but any method will do!)
  5. Wait a few days for your new friend’s “hair” to sprout!

My Plate coloring sheets

At our stations, we facilitate a “My Plate” sorting activity with plastic toy fruit. Try it at home with these coloring sheets (English and Spanish) from myplate.gov.
