November 1st, 2023 – Nestled in Iowa City’s Southside Market alongside fellow non-profit leaders, Table to Table and CommUnity, sits Field to Family, a growing organization that is having an impact well beyond its understated office space.

It’s here where Executive Director Michelle Kenyon and her staff run a non-profit that is on a mission to increase access to and education around healthy and local food.

“Many people don’t realize it when they drive by, but we are operating a comprehensive regional food hub and online market,” Kenyon said. “It’s our passion, and we believe it’s a gamechanger for Johnson County and Eastern Iowa.”

Field to Family started as an organization in 2002, but its mission expanded significantly five years ago to include the creation of a comprehensive food hub. The inspiration, Kenyon said, was to ensure everyone across Johnson County and Eastern Iowa should be able to eat fresh food with the seasons.

“Accessibility is a big issue, and we want to ensure everyone has the same opportunity to eat foods grown locally,” Kenyon said. “We also believe it is imperative to partner with as many local growers as possible, including those who are considered underrepresented, to ensure the supply can meet the community’s needs for the long-term.”

Field to Family is an education-based non-profit that forges connections and partnerships between Iowa growers, food service professionals, and community collaborators and advocates. “Our growers and consumers all play a key role in making this food system work,” Kenyon said. “That’s why we believe in building strong, lasting relationships by connecting local producers with customers.”

The organization does this on many levels: at the consumer level through its online farmers market and community outreach, and at the wholesale level for institutional customers seeking a diverse selection of products from a variety of producers. Field to Family works with early care centers, K-12 schools, retirement communities, colleges, universities, and other institutions. This allows food procurement specialists to source fresh food locally year round from a streamlined ordering system.

Becky Risdon, Williamsburg Schools Food Service Manager, said she appreciates the fresh produce Field to Family provides along with the opportunities students have to try new items. “Our students have really enjoyed all the vegetables we have been able to prepare,” she said. “The variety and quality have been outstanding. Our ability to support local farmers has been an added bonus.”

Field to Family sources from local growers within a 100-mile radius of Johnson/Linn counties and from partner food hubs in Iowa. In the past year, the non-profit has purchased from over 70 local vendors and three partner food hubs. Ensuring local farmers have a way to get their food to the consumer, whether through marketing, procurement, or distribution, is critical.

Last year, Field to Family was awarded a USDA grant, which allowed the organization to work with Meld Marketing in Iowa City. “We knew we had a great story to tell; we just needed help telling it. It’s not always clear to the public what we do. Words like food hub can be confusing so we wanted to ensure our messaging and marketing are easy to understand,” Kenyon said.

Meld immersed itself in the organization, working to evolve the identity and messaging to better reflect what the Field to Family brand stands for today. The new logo features three lines that represent the organization’s core areas: a comprehensive regional food hub, an online farmers market, and a mission to expand access and education in the community and schools.

“So much of our work originates in the field, and the exciting part is to watch all of the places the food can go and the lives it can impact, including families, consumers, growers, the region, school children, and so much more,” Board Co-Chair Brian Morelli said. “The new logo represents that movement whether it’s from farm to family, to a school, to another food hub, or wherever the future leads us.”

In 2021, the organization moved to 1051 US HWY 6 in Iowa City, allowing the non-profit to grow its online farmers market with a convenient drive-through on the backside of the building. Here, growers drop off seasonal produce, meat, dairy, plant starts and value-added food and farm products almost daily. This is also where buyers pick up their orders. The online market, which also offers delivery, started during Covid, and has continued to grow.

Outside of the market, the biggest growth area has been the organization’s evolution into a regional food hub. In this capacity, Field to Family manages the purchase, aggregation, storage, marketing, and delivery of local, sustainably produced food.

The goals of Field to Family’s food hub include making it easier for community members to choose and access locally sourced foods, farmers to sell their food and make a living wage; increasing the amount of food procured from Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) growers and others the USDA considers underestimated; partnering with community food distributors that reach individuals who are structurally excluded from our current food system; and educating food service providers on how to implement local into their cafeterias.

Five years in, Board Co-Chair Katy Meyer who is also Chef and Owner of Trumpet Blossom restaurant in Iowa City, said the organization is excited about its future. “We can see the impact we’re having, and the community we’re building. ”The idea is to educate the next generation about local food production and sustainability and why it matters.”

Putting people before profits, we hope to be a part of a much bigger food movement that educates and empowers people about the power of local and sustainably grown food.

Started in 2013 on just 1/2 acre, our farm now consists of 10 acres of sustainably-rasied vegetables and pasture raised broilers. We market our products through various channels such as CSA, On-Farm Sales via our weekly ordering system, Wholesale and Restaurants. Since our start, we have worked hard to create a more diverse and sustainable farm within our community of Coggon. We love what we do and we hope that our passion shows across every inch of our farm. -Your farmers, T.D. and Sarah

This planting began the transition of a traditional 80-acre livestock & row crop farm to one that supplies healthy local produce. It is BRO’s goal to supply high quality vegetables, apples, and pears to our community responsibly & sustainably. The orchard has expanded from 800 to over 4,500 trees. BRO has over 50 different types of new and classic apple varieties. In 2011 we installed our first moveable hoop house. It allows us to grow greens and root vegetables in the winter, as well as getting an early start on tomatoes and extending the season for other vegetable crops.

Mary and Vernon Zahradnik, the founders and continued visionaries for BRO, graciously invited their daughter and son-in-law, Emma and Marcus Johnson, to join in their venture in Central City, Iowa. They each have a lifetime of farming and agriculture experiences. Marcus and Emma Johnson spent seven years in Philadelphia working in the field of landscape architecture. This work gave them lots of opportunities to see how to build, grow, and create. It was in Philly that they were able to see the importance of healthy local food in the success of a community. In spring 2012 the Johnson’s sold their row house in Philly and headed west to eastern Iowa where a row house is called a town house and the land rolls gently with fields of corn, beans, pastures, and suburban development.

Having been a lifelong gardener and working on a family farm, Pop Pop desired to try small scale vegetable farming, just as his grandfather had done 100 years ago. He joined a group of diverse, enthusiast farmers in leasing land at the old Johnson County Poor Farm in 2020. It is Pop Pop’s hope to not only feed his extended family, but offer healthy, organically grown food to the community both through local farmers’ markets and food pantries. All the profits are donated to local charities. His goal is to share not only healthy food, but his love and knowledge of food production.

Food hubs work with food service directors, agencies and businesses to choose local meat, dairy, eggs and produce while in season, facilitating the delivery, storage, food safety and availability of local foods in partnership with regional growers.

After three years of growth, Field to Family is playing a pivotal role in the growth of the supply and demand of local foods in Iowa through strong partnerships with local farmers, schools, other key state, public institutions. New USDA funding streams that are meant to empower community food systems are directed towards food hubs, including Field to Family, with funds provided to increase local for school lunch, reduce food insecurity and support systematically disadvantaged farmers. Through strong relationships with local farmers, food hubs offer an alternative to distributors that rely on cheap labor, transnational distribution, food waste, high soil inputs and environmental issues that negatively impact our water, soil and air.

The following new funding streams will grow capacity, enhance local food markets and deepen the impact of food hubs in Iowa for years to come:

IOWA LOCAL FOOD PURCHASING ASSISTANCE (LFPA)

The USDA has made over 1.7 million dollars available for food hubs and Iowa’s six food banks to purchase local foods for distribution to Iowans in under-resourced communities through a new project called the Local Food Purchasing Assistance Program (LFPA). The goals of the program are to support efforts to reduce food insecurity, increase local food consumption and to help build and expand economic opportunity for local and socially disadvantaged producers.

Field to Family is one of 14 entities with a contract with the Iowa Department of Land Stewardship (IDALS) to utilize these funds from September 2022 to May of 2024. Field to Family will purchase food from growers who have registered for the program. Farmers can Register Here. Field to Family will then distribute it to community distribution agencies who have signed up for the program. Community partners interested in distributing local foods Register Here.

Food grown in Iowa or in the immediate surrounding counties is eligible for this program. This includes produce, grains, legumes, dairy, meat, mushrooms, eggs, honey, and maple syrup. Value added products containing at least 51% locally produced raw product are also eligible.

Potential Community Partners may include entities such as: Food Pantries, Meal sites, Religious Organizations, Residential facilities, Emergency shelters, Adult day centers, Early childcare sites, Summer feeding sites, Senior programs, Mobile food pantries, Backpack programs, Farmers Markets, Hospitals and clinics, YMCA or other recreation centers, and more.

“Field to Family has been preparing for this type of opportunity since we launched our food hub in 2018,” said Michelle Kenyon, Field to Family’s Executive Director. “We have built strong relationships with regional producers, school districts and other food service institutions and have facilitated the increase in supply and demand for local foods in our region. As a food hub, we are always looking for new institutions to deliver fresh and local foods to, as well as new farmer partners in order to expand the supply available.”

As Field to Family works to expand their impact to create a stronger community food system, the organization has recognized the importance of working with farmers who the USDA considers “socially disadvantaged.” These include BIPOC farmers – black, immigrant, people of color- as well as veterans, women, LGBT and beginning farmers. Out of the 60 + market vendors Field to Family is currently partnering with 34 who are considered socially disadvantaged, which is not typical even for food hubs at the national level.

“Providing access to new markets for more producers and helping more Americans experiencing food insecurity is going to take new partnerships, new innovations, and new ways of thinking – and the best solutions can often be local,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “This program provides tribes, states, and U.S. territories the ability to work in new and creative ways with their local partners, establishing connections between their producers and underserved communities. The food purchases made through LFPA will provide consistent access to locally and regionally sourced food, helping provide economic stability for farmers, producers and families, and improve health outcomes through nutrition and increased food security.”

LOCAL FOODS FOR SCHOOLS (LFS)

The USDA has made funds available to states to facilitate local foods for schools! Iowa school districts will soon be able to sign up for funds to purchase local foods. School districts will be matched with a food hub in their region. Field to Family currently works with 9 school districts, onboarding 3+ new partners with plans for more as we lead up to Iowa Local Food Day on September 28 (fourth Wednesday of the month) and for Farm to School month in October. Field to Family continues to be a primary resource for Food Service Directors when it comes to seasonal menu planning, incorporating local for lunch and adding taste testing and opportunities for students to connect with Iowa farmers.

HEALTHY FOOD FINANCING INITIATIVE

America’s Healthy Food Financing Initiative provides resources to healthy food retail and to overcome the higher costs and initial barriers to serving areas with inequitable access. The program ultimately aims to provide additional capacity building and financing resources to build a more equitable food system that supports the health and economic vibrancy of all Americans. Field to Family was the only Iowa recipient for this program and it will support the organizations work to: increase demand for local, healthy foods; build infrastructure and capacity for increasing access to underestimated communities and increasing the amount of socially disadvantaged growers growing food in the region.

The investment will run from January 1, 2023-December 31, 2023.
