Hills Elementary hosted our seventh ICCSD Farm to School – Farmer Fair..
All K-6 students rotated through these hands-on activities:
- Meeting farmer Shelly Squier with Squier Squash and Donnelly Farms
- Building a composting system with Scott Koepke, New Pioneer Food Co-op/Soilmates
- Getting active while learning about MyPlate nutrition with Maureen Meyer, Americorps Member, Johnson County Public Health
- Tasting local produce prepared by David Burt, owner of Burt Family Food Services, led by Adweta Joshi, JCPH Practicum Student and Heather Widmayer, Farm to School Coordinator
Lisa TeBockhorst, Hills Elementary’s principal says, “We are looking forward to the community effort in providing students with hands-on experiences related to farming and healthy food choices. This will be a great event for our students at Hills Elementary, where town and country meet!”
The Hills Elementary Farmer Fair is presented by the ICCSD Farm to School Chapter, a program of Field to Family. Farmer Fairs during the 2012-13 school year are made possible by funding and employee volunteer support from MidWestOne Bank, along with coordination assistance from Johnson County Public Health’s (JCPH) AmeriCorps Member, Maureen Meyer and Adweta Joshi, a JCPH Practicum Student.
