The school garden at Weber Elementary has been a great learning resource for Anne Spencer’s 5th/6th grade class. Last spring her classroom used the garden for a Science Unit called “Experimenting with Plants.” Her students chose seeds they wanted to plant: lettuce, mustard, spinach, peas, onions, kohlrabi, and potatoes. They planted one seed indoors under a grow light and another outdoors, and then they compared how each plant grew. In the spring they harvested the produce and made themselves a delicious classroom salad bar. This fall they’ve harvested potatoes and sweet potatoes, which they’ll use to make soup and sweet potato pie bars.
